Program Overview

Global Shared Value Leadership (GSVL) connects leaders, organizations and communities to tackle conflicting goals and navigate between sectors and cultures to create shared value. GSVL participants will acquire a range of leadership skills, tools and frameworks to simultaneously create economic value and address an environmental or social challenge confronted by a given community.

GSVL graduates will be able to link the interests of organizations and their leaders with the needs of communities to design shared value initiatives. The GSVL Certificate is a formal recognition that you have completed a transformative 10-day action learning experience from the highly selective Key Executive Leadership Programs at American University.

Program schedule includes :

  • Day 1 – Welcome, Course Overview, and Introduction to Shared Value

  • Day 7 – Leadership and Communication Strategies for Shared Value
  • Day 8 – Guest Speaker and Implementing Shared Value Initiatives

  • Day 10 – Shared Value Action Plan Presentations/Certification Ceremony

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the connections between community needs and organizational interests
  • Apply the skills, tools, and frameworks that are necessary to successfully create shared value
  • Use the action learning process, and emergent, design and systems thinking to tackle complex challenges
  • Negotiate between multi-stakeholder environments to achieve common objectives
  • Design initiatives that generate impact and mutually benefit all stakeholders
  • Enhance leadership skills necessary to navigate an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world
  • Understand how personal values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations enhance or impeded the collaborative process
  • Discover how engagement, presence, and authenticity impacts how people interact and learn together
  • Acquire new cross-sector and cross-cultural communication skills necessary to achieve high-impact collaboration outcomes

Faculty

This program draws on the talents of the world’s top leading thinkers, educators, and practitioners in the fields of innovation, shared value creation, leadership, economic growth, social entrepreneurship, cross-cultural community, strategic management, public administration, and negotiation. Facilitators are expert practitioners and will employ concepts and tools developed by industry leaders, draw from the participant’s experience, and apply them to a student-specific shared value context.

Learning Model

An experiential learning environment will be created to promote dynamic interchange of ideas, shared learning, teamwork, collaboration, discovery, and greater personal accountability for achieving results.

  • Learning Track:
    • Shared Value creation – the course will guide participants through the process of understanding and linking community needs with individual and organizational interests to identify opportunities for designing and implementing shared value initiatives.
  • Methodologies:
    • Action Learning – transformational process for individuals, teams, leaders and organizations to successfully adapt, learn, innovate, and succeed in complex environments.
    • Leadership – develop a new way of seeing, learning, and doing (vs. applying pre-determined solutions) as the basis for leading successful implementation of the shared value model.

 

The experiential approach includes self-assessment exercises, practical group exercises, use of applied examples, and discussions from business, social, and environmental perspectives.

 

Eligibility

In order to optimize the learning environment, this program will enroll 8 business leaders, 8 government managers, and 8 non-profit executives for each 10-day GSVL cohort.

You are eligible to apply if you have:

  • At least 5 years experience in management and leadership
  • A graduate degree and/or relevant experience
  • Competence in English (minimum TOEFL score 600)
